L79L series three-terminal negative regulators use internal current limiting and thermal shutdown. If sufficient heatsink is provided, they can output up to 100 mA of output current.

Designed as constant voltage regulators in a wide range of applications, including local or on-board regulation, to eliminate the noise and distribution problems associated with single-point regulation. They can also be used with power transition elements to make high current voltage regulators. Used as a replacement for the Zener diode/resistor combination, the L79L series offers an effective output impedance improvement typically of two orders of magnitude along with lower quiescent current and lower noise.
