The LM2940-N and LM2940C positive voltage regulators are capable of providing a typical drop voltage of 0.5 V and a maximum output current of 1 V to 1 A over the entire temperature range. Additionally, a quiescent current reduction circuit is included that reduces the ground current when the difference between the input voltage and the output voltage exceeds approximately 3 V. With an output current of 1 A and an input-output difference of 5 V, the quiescent current is therefore only 30 mA. Higher quiescent currents are only available when the regulator is in dropout mode (VIN − VOUT ≤ 3 V).
