Shunt Resistors generally have a small, well-defined resistance so as not to affect the current they are measuring. A shunt resistor typically differs from a regular resistor in that it has one or more metal strips of two large terminals associated with them. The resistance of a metal is inversely proportional to its cross-sectional area, so a shunt resistor shows more stripes, lowering the resistance.
