The 8421 provides the functions of a BCD to seven segment decoder and an output driver capacity. Lamp test (LT), dim (BI), and latch enable (LE) inputs are used to test the display, dim or pulse modulate the display's brightness, and store a BCD code, respectively. Seven-segment light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can be used directly or indirectly with incandescent, fluorescent, gas discharge, or liquid crystal readings.
